Somaly Mam Foundation Hosts Successful Launch at United Nations

November 16, 2007

The Somaly Mam Foundation officially launched Wednesday, November 7, 2007 in New York City at the United Nations. The event was preceded by the premier of Holly a movie produced by Priority Films. Visit www.priorityfilms.com to learn more about the film and its locations.

Daryl Hannah served as the M.C. for the event, which drew over 250 people including representatives from Vital Voices, LexisNexis (Somaly Mam Foundation corporate sponsor), government officials, Priority Films, and celebrities including honorary event committee member Ally Sheedy, actress Nicolette Hart and comedian Horatio Sanz.

The girls from AFESIP’s centers designed scarves, jewelry and other items that were given as gifts to individuals as they made their donation to the foundation. The evening was a success, bringing tens of thousands of seed funding to help grow the Somaly Mam Foundation and fund AFESIP Cambodia.

  5. As a foster/adopt mother, I have seen and lived with the effects of sexual abuse. We live in an overly sexualized world where young girls are exposed daily. I will do my part in my local area to help expose the abuse of these young girls. Somaly, you are helping heal hurt girls. A great big thanks to you!

  6. Dear Somaly,
I’ve just finish reading the book written by you.
It really touched my hearts, and I couldn’t imagined how much you have gone through… but to let you know, love is around the world, and I’m sure those who are aware of this situation, will pray for you and all the children who are suffering as well…
    God Bless………

  7. I have been to Thailand twice and have seen a very small snap shot of underage prostitution and it made me sick to the bone. Bad enough that it happens but even worse is that the majority of us accept it and we return to our cosy safe Western homes. Whilst you paid the ultimate price Somaly you became the voice that many of us have chosen to not use, without you there would be so much more despair amongst these beautiful girls. How magnificent is this commitment that you have for these innocent victims? You and I are the same age and I see how different my life has been - I will think of you always.
