As part of her regular work, Somaly Mam assists with police-organized raids on brothels in Cambodia to find victims of trafficking and rescue them from situations of slavery. Yesterday, award-winning New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof accompanied the rescue and recovery team, making this experience available to audiences across the globe.

Kristof is in Cambodia filming a segment for the upcoming "Half the Sky" PBS miniseries. He visited Somaly and the AFESIP shelters in Cambodia with a film crew, highlighting the work being done to provide urgently needed services to survivors of sex trafficking and to eradicate modern-day slavery. Kristof accompanied Somaly on this raid to get a taste of her day-to-day activities and to bear witness to the rescue process. He live-tweeted the event, sharing what happened as the events unfolded.

This brothel, located in northern Cambodia, was well-armed and owned by a husband-wife pair with military ties. Despite opposition and a stand-off with armed soldiers, the brothel owners were taken into police custody and the survivors inside were rescued.
